About

Barbara Sutherland is an artist and educator whose practice predominantly involves installation and object making, deeply grounded and informed by fibre material, history, and processes. She is particularly interested in the propositions of a priori, a posteriori and topology as guides in thinking through ideas in her studio practice. She contemplates our sensory experience of place, privileging the tactile, which guides her investigation into spatial relationships. Sutherland’s work expands from her knowledge of textiles and slips away from the known to the indeterminate, or to an expanded view of things.

Sutherland has been teaching at Alberta University of the Arts since 2011 and is currently an Assistant Professor in Fibre in the School of Craft and Emerging Media. She has received numerous awards including Canada Council for the Arts: Research and Creation Grants, a SSHRC Graduate scholarship and a BFA Governor General Award. Her work has been exhibited across Canada, in Europe and Australia and she has worked in collaboration with other artists, writers and composers.
